5th December 2007

Members enjoyed the fellowship of a visit by Kilsyth Rotary Club to Cumbernauld. Plant manager Donald MacBrayne of Scottish Water gave members a very enjoyable and educational presentation on the new Deerdykes Composting & Organics Recycling Facility – which composts 100% green materials including grass clippings, wood chips and branches. The Cumbernauld plant uses composting as nature's way of recycling. Over time various microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, break down organic matter - resulting in “Pod” a valuable source of nutrient rich organic compost with a whole host of uses, from landscaping and turf top dressing to encouraging plant growth – all useful products considering Cumbernauld’s heavy clay soils. In the first two years of operation the facility has treated more than 50,000 tonnes of green and woody materials generated by local authorities’ collections.
