"Walk Across Scotland" - Forth & Clyde Canal

Saturday 30th April - Sunday 1st May 2005

Well it’s all over for this year – and what a success.

Buses were used to transport most of the walkers from Cumbernauld to Bowling on the Saturday morning others being dropped off by family or friends.

122 walkers registered and left the Bowling Basin near Dumbarton in fine weather walking along the Forth and Clyde Canal towpath to the Clydebank Shopping Centre, which always seems to be a good spot for a toilet break, and onto Lock 27 Public House where most found time for a short break. Then it is onward passing the Bishopbriggs Leisuredome to the Stables Public House. Many of the walkers break at this point and have lunch. With another 6 miles to go it’s onward through Kirkintilloch, where energy drinks were distributed by friends from The Rotary Club of Kirkintilloch, to Twechar for checking in and receiving of Certificates. The walkers covered 19miles over the day.

Saturday

127 walkers registered on the Sunday morning despite poor weather conditions at Twechar to again follow the Forth and Clyde Canal towpath passing Underwood Lock where again energy drinks were distributed. The walkers had covered 8 miles by this point. Then it was best foot forward and onto the Falkirk Wheel, ideal for a short lunch break, before towards Camelon and through to the finish at the Grangemouth Marina. Despite the atrocious weather during the day most walkers were in good spirit when receiving their Certificate at the end.

Walkers who did not have transport were then transported to Cumbernauld or Twechar for connections homeward.
