19th October 2007 - A helping hand at Abronhill Nursery School

Cumbernauld Rotarians have helped Abronhill Nursery following the recent vandalism to their nursery patio and equipment. Taking advantage of the school holidays – Rotarians met the Headmistress Fiona Maxwell on Friday and spent most of the day – making two large planters and three plant containers using resources provided by helpful Cumbernauld Companies - who all rushed to be of assistance following the photographs of vandalism in the Cumbernauld News. B&Q quickly agreed to supply all the necessary plants and planting required as a gift to Abronhill Nursery – the children will now be able to plant the plants and bulbs and to have a valuable personal involvement in the venture.

Timber for the project was supplied by Scotia Fencing allowing the Rotarians to dismantle the existing play box and to reassemble the framing to form new planters. Scottish Water were happy to supply bags of the new product “ Soil Improver” a humus mixture made locally at their Deerdykes Facility from grass cuttings and garden waste treated and processes to make an excellent soil improver. As well as helping Abronhill Nursery School -Scottish Water are demonstrating the environmental value of collecting waste materials – and processing them to provide a valuable and environmentally friendly by-product to be sold in Cumbernauld Area to improve the heavy clay garden soil.

The Head mistress Fiona Maxwell – thanked the Rotarians for their skilled labour and giving their own time so freely – for working so hard and for taking time to make all the arrangements – showing an example of “Service over Self”. Fiona promised to welcome the Rotarians back soon to see the fruits of their labour as the nursery children do their planting.

She thanked all the concerned companies in Cumbernauld who had been involved including ASDA who had immediately sent a member of staff to help.

Tom Reilly President Cumbernauld Rotary club – was delighted that members had made such an effort to be of assistance to the local community and that they had found it a pleasure and very enjoyable to work in a team and to be able to help make good the vandalism – and to see that their efforts were so appreciated by the Nursery school.
