The President and members of The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld rolled their sleeves up and completed the first of three phases of work to improve the environment around St. Maurice’s Pond in Cumbernauld.

Saturday’s efforts saw the pruning of trees to improve safety, the clearing of overgrown path verges and the removal of bottles, bags, traffic cones and even a wheel barrow from the Pond itself.

Club President Alex Mearns said “this is a great opportunity for Rotary to work in partnership with colleagues in North Lanarkshire Council and to be involved in activities which will benefit the whole community. We are looking forward to the next phase of this worthwhile initiative and I hope that next time someone remembers to bring the coffee!!!!”

4th June 2008

A good turn out of Rotarians and Partners enjoyed a talk from Chris Hever and Jennifer Teale on their business of Hypnotherapy, Indian Head Massage and Reiki based in Glasgow and Kirkintilloch – the Rotarians were really interested in the presentation – which included a five minutes session by Chris – who is an affiliated member of the British Society of clinical Hypnosis. Members closed their eyes and relaxed – while Chris requested them to close their eyes - clear their minds and fill them with pleasant thoughts.

Jennifer highlighted the modern uses of Hypnotherapy – getting away from the stage presentations which are high in the public mind - and gave examples of how the ancient processes where finding a place in modern society. Members asked detailed questions and had a deep discussion on Hypnotherapy as their personal experiences had effected them.

Louise Horne from Riding for the Disabled gave an excellent presentation on their work for children and young adults. The horses and ponies at the RDA centres are made available for disabled youngsters and carriages are also available for children who cannot ride the ponies. It was wonderful to see photographs of the joy on Children’s faces as they used the facilities – giving treatment to children as at the same time giving enjoyment. The centre is based at Caldercuilt Road Summerston Glasgow G23 5NA. The centre is very keen to have more volunteers in every aspect of running the centre

9th April 2008

Cumbernauld Rotarians had their minds stretched back to earlier times in Cumbernauld – when Ian Shillady a young student architect who lives in Condorrat and is at Strathclyde University present his Thesis on “Cumbernauld Town Centre from concept to present day”. It was fascinating to see and hear a young professional’s analysis of Cumbernauld Town Centre as many Rotarians present had been involved or had seen the Town Centre develop over thirty years. This led to many questions and an analysis of the centre from the audience – Ian was ably thanked by Jim Donnelly for giving the Club an exciting evening and food for thought.

2nd April 2008   RYLA Candidates and parents visit Club

As part of the successful partnership between The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld and Abronhill High School senior pupils Vhari Ingleston and Amanda Crichton have been selected to attend the 2008 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp at Ardeonaig on the shores of Loch Tay in July. Pictured here with their parents at a meeting of the Rotary Club in its new home at Dullatur Golf Club Vhari and Amanda were selected because of their potential for development as future community or business leaders.

The camp will challenge the girls both physically and mentally and in addition to building self confidence will also enable them to learn more about their own capabilities. Commenting on the scheme Past President Frank Clark said “we are grateful to our friends at Abronhill High School for again identifying such high calibre delegates – having met with the girls I am confident that they will both derive the maximum benefit from their participation in what I know is a challenging but rewarding experience.   This is the third year in which we have collaborated with the school and the feedback from pupils who have taken part has been excellent. We are also happy to see the school taking part in our annual Walk Across Scotland where they have raised generous sums of money in support of Cumbernauld’s own Strathcarron Hospice. “

Victoria Kelly gave an excellent talk to members on the Dogs Trust - a national organisation with a base in Glasgow.

Vicky highlighted their believe that no healthy dog should ever be destroyed and that every dog should have a chance to lead a happy and healthy life in a loving home.

There are lots of ways to find a suitable dog – Dogs Trust think rehoming is the best one. Dogs Trust works with you to match your needs to the needs of dogs. The Trust knows that choosing the dog that’s right for you leads to happy people and happy dogs. The objects of DOGS TRUST is to protect dogs from maltreatment, cruelty, suffering. Andy Cunningham gave the vote thanks referring to his own dogs and thanking Vicky for her excellent talk.

5th December 2007

Members enjoyed the fellowship of a visit by Kilsyth Rotary Club to Cumbernauld. Plant manager Donald MacBrayne of Scottish Water gave members a very enjoyable and educational presentation on the new Deerdykes Composting & Organics Recycling Facility – which composts 100% green materials including grass clippings, wood chips and branches. The Cumbernauld plant uses composting as nature's way of recycling. Over time various microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, break down organic matter - resulting in “Pod” a valuable source of nutrient rich organic compost with a whole host of uses, from landscaping and turf top dressing to encouraging plant growth – all useful products considering Cumbernauld’s heavy clay soils. In the first two years of operation the facility has treated more than 50,000 tonnes of green and woody materials generated by local authorities’ collections.
