Burns Supper

Cumbernauld Rotarians partners and friends paid their annual tribute to the life and times of our national bard at their annual Burns Supper held in Dullatur Golf Club last Friday.  Pictured getting up close to the “Great Chieftain o’ the Pudden Race” is Past President and local dentist Gordon Stewart whilst another Club Past President Tom Munro delivers an excellent (and hilarious) recitation of one of Rabbies timeless poems.

Our Burns Supper now something of a tradition for the Rotary Club goes from strength to strength and whilst we don’t take ourselves too seriously (which is perhaps just as well) it remains a fitting tribute to one of Scotland’s most famous sons – the immortal Robert Burns.

7th February 2012   Primary School Quiz
The popularity of the Rotary Club of Cumbernauld’s Primary School Quiz continues to grow from two schools taking part only three years ago to no fewer than ten this year. Held once again at St Andrews and Cumbernauld Primary School which provided an enthusiastic and supportive P7 audience each school was represented by a team of four pupils. Following a very competitive and enjoyable quiz Carbrain Primary School was announced the Winner in the closest fought competition so far. Organiser of the quiz Rotarian John Isgrove said “I would extend our congratulations to all of the teams who took part all of whom said they had a lot of fun. I must make special mention of the winning team from Carbrain Primary School, Adam Paterson, Carina McCreery, Amy Keyes and Talia Quigley who were proud delighted and excited by their success. All participating team members received a certificate from the Rotary Club and in addition Carbrain members received a Rotary “Dictionary for Life” plus of course the engraved “Primary School Quiz Cup” which they will keep and proudly display for the next twelve months. Carbrain Primary will now represent Cumbernauld in the next round of the Quiz against other schools from across Central and Southern Scotland .

We wish them every success and hope that they enjoy the experience. We would also thank the staff at each of the schools which participated for their enthusiastic support.

10th December 2011   Festive Food Collection

The generosity of the good people of Cumbernauld was once again in evidence last Saturday when the Rotary Club undertook their Annual Festive Food collection which is now in its 12th year. Seen here completing the packing of donated items are Rotarian wives Linda Clark, Jan Montgomery, Betty Davie and Pat Wilson.

Thanks to the generosity of the customers of TESCO Craigmarloch we were able to hand over almost 140 food packages for distribution by Cumbernauld Action for Care of the Elderly, The Salvation Army, Unemployed Workers Association and Women’s Aid. We are as always grateful to our friends at TESCO for their support with this initiative and to our “volunteer” Rotary wives who worked throughout the day to do the hard bit – the actual bag packing. It’s is heart warming to think that a number of individuals less fortunate than ourselves in our local communities will have a brighter Christmas as a result of our modest efforts.

5th December 2011   Young Chef Competition

Now in its second year the Rotary Young Chef Competition with the support of Cumbernauld College has clearly caught the imagination and is growing in popularity. All Secondary Schools were invited to enter competitors and a total of 7 budding Chefs from Greenfaulds High, St Maurice’s High and Cumbernauld College took part.

Contestants were set a challenging task of setting up a table for two people and cooking a main course and dessert all within a two hour window and using their own ingredients, cutlery crockery and serving dishes. The event took place in the Cumbernauld College Training Kitchen and Dining Room under the eagle eye of judge Hector McKenzie who had previously headed the Catering Department in the College. Hector said “We were looking for how they prepared the meal, whether they had thought it through in terms of planning, healthy eating, hygiene, economics, time management and of course taste. We were looking for much more than simply the end product.

The clear winner was Kevin McGinley from St Maurice’s High School who prepared a main course of Mexican Chilli Chicken and lemon infused rice with a dessert of petite strawberry Swiss sponges and cream completing the winning meal. On hearing that he had won Kevin modestly said “I thought that I had not won because some things did not turn out as I had hoped – I am delighted at having succeeded from such a competitive field”. Kevin will now go on to represent Cumbernauld at the next stage of the competition.

This event would not be possible without the excellent support of Assistant College Principal Tom Dodds and our friends at Cumbernauld College. In academic terms the College goes from strength to strength yet its roots are firmly embedded in the communities which it serves – support for the Young Chef Competition and other Rotary initiatives provides a clear demonstration of this. We are also indebted to our local ASDA store for so generously donating a magnificent cookery book as a prize for the winner which was in addition to the certificates and chefs aprons which all contestants were presented with.

28th August 2011   Strathcarron Hospice - It's a Knockout

     .

Members of the Rotary Club of Cumbernauld are seen here honing their cooking skills (not very successfully at this point) on the Barbecue at the Annual Strathcarron Hospice "It's a Knockout" Tournament held at the Scottish Police College Tulliallan.  In a marathon session lasting eight and a half hours twelve Rotarians from Cumbernauld cooked off and sold over 500 burgers (most cooked to perfection). This has become an annual event in the Clubs calendar and it all helps to raise much needed funds for Strathcarron our local Hospice which is held in universally high regard by the people of Cumbernauld. This is exactly the sort of local community activity that Rotarians enjoy and is one of many which we have planned over the next year.

Five Rotarians have recently been awarded Paul Harris Fellowships by the Rotary Club of Cumbernauld, the highest honour that a Club can bestow on its members. The Fellowships were created in the name of Paul Harris a Chicago Lawyer who founded the Rotary movement in 1905 and are given "in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among the peoples of the world". These are the first Fellowships awarded by the Club in over twenty years.

Charity Canal Walk   Sunday 1st May 2011

TESCO Craigmarloch walking for Marie Curie   Cumbernauld Action Care of the Elderly

A.T.C. Cumbernauld

Now in its fourteenth year the Rotary Club of Cumbernauld Annual Charity Canal Walk was once again an outstanding success with a broad range of local groups’ charities and individuals taking part. Amongst the participants this year was Cumbernauld Action for Care of the Elderly (CACE), Cumbernauld ATC, Redburn School, TESCO Craigmarloch (walking for Marie Curie) and of course a massive team of twenty from Cumbernauld College once again walking for Strathcarron Hospice.

With charities and community groups feeling the effects of the economic situation the Walk provided an ideal safe and fun way to raise sponsorship money for pet causes. We are grateful for the support of British Waterways, Cumbernauld College, Brodies Labels. Barrs PLC and Envirosan - without which this event would not be possible. It is staggering to think that in the first ten years alone we have enabled local groups to raise over one third of a million pounds for their own purposes and many of those taking part for the first time have committed to doing it again next year.

8th February 2011   Primary School Quiz
The Cumbernauld Primary School Quiz now in its second year has really caught the imagination with no fewer than seven of our local primaries enthusiastically taking part. This year teams of P7 pupils from Abronhill, Cumbernauld, Ravenswood, St Andrews, St Helens, Westfield and Whitelees were all involved. All eight rounds in the Quiz followed the “Curriculum for Excellence” being taught in primary schools and at the end of what was a hard fought and hugely enjoyable event The St Andrews team emerged as the winner.
Quiz Organiser Rotarian John Isgrove said “I was hugely impressed by the high standard of all of the teams and by the enthusiasm and competitiveness which they demonstrated. We are indebted to our friends at Cumbernauld and St Andrews Primary Schools for again hosting the event and for the lively engagement of the pupils in the audience when the Quiz papers were being marked. Working with and in support of young people lies at the heart of all that Rotary stands for and it was a privilege to be involved.”   All participants received a certificate from the Rotary Club. The winning team members, pictured above, also each received a Rotary illustrated “Dictionary for Life” and the Team Quiz Cup to display in their school for the next twelve months. St Andrews will now represent Cumbernauld in the semi-final of the Rotary Quiz covering Central and Southern Scotland

14th January 2011   Young Chef Competition
The Club with the support of Cumbernauld College held the first round of the Young Chef Competition the winner of which will go on to the second round competing against the winner selected by The Rotary Club of Shotts and hopefully on to the national final.    All local secondary schools and the College were invited to enter competitors and a total of six budding chefs from Greenfaulds High School and Cumbernauld College took part.

Winner Kirsty Craig from Cumbernauld College who prepared a main course of chicken supreme with a pepper and basil coulis and duchesse potatoes. Her dessert of apple tart and butterscotch completed the winning meal.

Participating in the competition were Stephanie Edgar and Daniel Deans from Greenfaulds High School and Kirsty Craig, Craig Logan, James Nixon and Mae Jennine Mamaril from Cumbernauld College.

Judges Steven Killday, who had previously headed the Catering Department in the College, and local photographer and Past President of the Rotary Club Bob Aird himself a talented amateur chef with Kirsty

Contestants were set the challenging task of setting up a table for two people and cooking a main course and dessert all within a two hour window and using their own ingredients crockery cutlery and serving dishes. The event took place in the College Training Kitchen.

The cooperation extended by Assistant Principal Tom Dodds and the team at Cumbernauld College underlines the place of the College as a key resource in our community and we are indebted to our local ASDA store for so generously donating a cookery book as a prize to the winner which was in addition to the certificates and chefs aprons which all contestants were presented with.

11th November 2010   St Maurices High School Annual Public Speaking Competition
The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld was delighted to be invited to take part in the judging of the St Maurices High School Annual Public Speaking Competition for S1 to S3 pupils. Club Secretary Frank  – one of the judges – said  "He was hugely impressed not just by the winners but with each and every one of the 13 contestants all of whom reflected great credit on the school and on their parents. Our future lies in the hands of our younger people and Frank left the event in a very positive and optimistic frame of mind indeed.

We welcomed the opportunity to be involved in this event and whilst Frank was happy to be one of the judges he had no idea that the standard would be so high and that the task of the judges would be so difficult. First prize went to Kenneth Grant 2C and second prize to Mark Hansen 2D but the judges were so taken by the presentation given by Rebecca Dunese 1F that they decided that she deserved a “special commendation”. The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld look forward to continuing and developing links with the school.
