Saturday 10th October 2009 - A Day in the life of

Cumbernauld Rotary

The 1.2 million Rotarians in over 32000 clubs worldwide were encouraged to simultaneously undertake a wide range of community projects to mark “A Day in the life of Rotary” on Saturday 10th October. The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld opted to put the finishing touches to the imaginative Beechgrove Garden sponsored project at Glencryan School and Rotarians are seen here taking a rest from their labours. Although the photograph suggest that we were “poles apart” team work was very much the order of the day as Rotarian (and Project Coordinator) Bobby Johnstone directed us in clearing weeds, shifting tons of hard core and undertaking high quality joinery work. This is an excellent example of “hands on Rotary” making a real difference in our local community for the benefit of the children attending Glencryan School.

4th October 2009   Strathcarron 10k Run
The 10k Run is one of the main events in the Hospice fundraising calendar and this year around 600 runners took part in what was an excellent and well organised race. Participants pay a registration fee and are encouraged to raise sponsorship which provides much needed assistance for our local Hospice in a very challenging financial climate. This year we were supported by Rotarians from Kilsyth, Denny, Vale of Carron and Bridge of Allan and Dunblane as well as members of The Round Table from Falkirk, Larbert and Livingston and we were again delighted to be able to support this respected local charity.

26th September 2009
Rotarians from Cumbernauld and Linlithgow Grange are seen here receiving their “instructions” prior to a successful bucket collection at the ground of Falkirk FC in aid of Donaldson’s School for children with hearing impairment.

Services like Donaldson’s who do magnificent work need all of the support that they can get and we were delighted that in only an hour and a half we were able to raise £600 thanks to the generosity of the fans attending a recent Falkirk v Kilmarnock game. This just one of the many ways in which Rotary serves the wider community.

9th September 2009
The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld continues to grow with the induction of its fourth new member in the last three months. Prominent local man Gordon Wright best known in his capacity as Chairman of Westerwood Community Council is seen here being welcomed into the Club by President Robert McLachlan in the presence of Rotary District Governor Alastair Davies. Commenting today Robert said more Rotarians enables us to do more of Rotary’s good works at Local National and International level to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Gordon’s knowledge and expertise and his commitment to the local community will be a valuable addition to our Club.

The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld was honoured recently by a visit from Rotary District Governor Alastair Davies who paid tribute to the growth in membership and in particular to the Clubs strong commitment to supporting those less fortunate than ourselves at Local National and International level.

During the visit the opportunity was taken to present Abronhil High School pupil Craig Brown with a certificate marking his successful completion of the Rotary Young Leaders Award a week long outward bound type course set on the shores of Loch Tay which stretches those attending both mentally and physically. Commenting on his participation in the course Craig said “RYLA has changed my life and has given me a broader outlook on the beliefs of minorities and also a fresh look at the beliefs of the majority. Overall the leadership skills which the course brought out in me have made me more aware of the challenges which lie ahead of me in life and so have prepared me for these.

30th August 2009   Cooking burgers at Strathcarron It's a Knockout at Tulliallan

Members of the Rotary Club of Cumbernauld manned the BBQ at the recent highly successful “it’s a Knockout Competition” organised by Strathcarron Hospice at the Scottish Police College Tulliallan. In a marathon session lasting from 9.30 in the morning until 6.00 in the afternoon ten Rotarians from Cumbernauld cooked off and sold no fewer than 700 Burgers. We lost count of the number of cold drinks teas coffees and crisps that we sold but the effort was more than worth it because this was an exceptional fund raiser for the Hospice with 51 teams taking part – all with a healthy appetite!!!!  This is exactly the sort of local community activity that Rotarians enjoy and it is one of many that we have planned for the next year

2nd September   Presentation to Cumbernauld Branch of Multiple Sclerosis Society
Immediate Past President Alex took time out from the regular Wednesday Rotary Club meeting to visit the local branch of The Multiple Sclerosis Society and present a cheque for £200.00 to the Branch Chairperson Margaret Robertson. Alex said that he had some close links with the M.S.Sociaty and Redburn through this wife Jennifer who started up the local branch of the M.S. and worked as a paediatric physiotherapist working with children in Redburn School.

On the same night Jamie Hepburn MSP visited the Branch.

25th August 2009   Presentation to Redburn School
Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of Cumbernauld Alex Mearns is seen here with fellow Rotarians, staff and pupils on the day that he presented Redburn School with a cheque for £200.00. Commenting on the visit Alex said “at the end of my year as Club President I had a small balance of funds to disburse and I had no hesitation in deciding that Redburn School would be one of those to benefit. The work that Redburn does year in and year out to help some very special children achieve their full potential is quite humbling and I am delighted that Rotary is able to help albeit in a small way”. 29th July 2009   Induction of John Isgrove & Graham Russell
Pictured here with the Club President Robert McLachlan welcomes John Isgrove and Graham Russell into the Rotary Club of Cumbernauld. Commenting on the occasion Robert said today “It is pleasing to see the Club going from strength to strength and it is particularly encouraging for me to induct two new members so early on in the Rotary year. This reflects the growing interest in Rotary in our area and of course more Rotarians mean more good work by Rotary in supporting communities and individuals at local national and international level

18th July 2009   RYLA  - Girls group departs Stirling Services

Cumbernauld Rotarians are seen here giving a rousing send off to the first of this years RYLA (Rotary Young Leaders Award) delegates. Rebecca Brown (ninth from the left) a senior pupil at Abronhill High School was chosen by the school to take advantage of the opportunity to attend the one week outward bound type course supervised by Rotary and run by the Abernethy Trust on the shores of Loch Tay. Rebecca who wants to pursue a career in politics will undertake a hugely rewarding programme which will stretch her both physically and mentally and which has been described by some previous delegates as “life changing”.

10th April 2009

Rotary Club Secretary Professor Frank Clark and incoming Vice President Ken Robertson are seen here demonstrating a Water Survival Box to the pupils of Holy Cross Primary School Croy.

Commenting on the visit to the school Frank said “It is great to maintain our long association with Holy Cross Primary and to see and hear at first hand about the marvellous efforts of the children (and the teaching staff) in raising funds to help people less fortunate than ourselves. In the past the school has raised significant sums of money to enable the Rotary Club to purchase emergency shelters and water purification kit to be sent to disaster areas throughout the world”.It is no exaggeration to say that their efforts have literally saved lives and on this occasion as a result of a Sponsored Silence, Water Walk, Raffles, Parental Workshop and Filled Money Box they have been able to donate over £1200.

18th March 2009

When Condorrat man Paul Thain who suffers from the rare genetic disorder Tuberous Sclerosis outgrew his previous tricycle his mother Jennifer approached the Rotary Club of Cumbernauld for assistance in purchasing a replacement. Club Secretary Professor Frank Clark said “amongst the many other challenges Paul’s condition affects his mobility and the specially adapted tricycle affords him some degree of independence and exercise and it is clear that he enjoys cycling. When we heard that the Tuberous sclerosis Association was wiling to fund 50% of the cost of a replacement our Club President Alex Mearns had no hesitation in using part of his discretionary fund to meet the balance. It is heart warming to see that such a modest investment can make such a difference to the quality of someone’s life and this is exactly the type of local initiative which Rotary is happy to be associated with.”

29th  January 2009   Rotarian Bobby receives Award
Rotarian Bobby Johnstone receives the Lanarkshire Community Champion Award from The Provost of North Lanarkshire Tom Culey and the Provost of South Lanarkshire Russell Clearie.

14th January 2009   Kilsyth Rotaract visit club

Pictured with Rotary Club of Cumbernauld President Alex Mearns and Rotarian Bill Craik from Kilsyth are founder members of the newly formed Rotaract Club of Kilsyth Interim President David Breton, Interim Treasurer Heather Macfarlane and Interim Communications Convener John Revie. The Rotaractors visited the Rotary Club and gave an excellent presentation outlining how they had formed the new club and setting out their plans for the future. Commenting on the visit Secretary Frank Clark said “it is enormously reassuring to see such enthusiastic young people committed to the ideal of service in their local community and beyond and we hope to see each one of them maintain and develop that interest in the future by adding to the growing ranks of active Rotarians in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area.

13th December 2008   Annual Festive Food Collection

The spirit of Christmas was alive and well at TESCO in Craigmarloch when Cumbernauld Rotarians and their partners carried out their Annual Festive Food Collection.

We asked customers to add one or two items to their shopping and to place them in our trolley when they were leaving the store. This simple act enabled us to gather enough items to prepare over 150 parcels which will be distributed by Cumbernauld Action for Care of the Elderly, The Salvation Army, Women’s Aid and The Unemployed Workers Association to people in Cumbernauld who are less fortunate than ourselves.

Despite the difficult economic circumstances it says much for the people of Cumbernauld that they can still demonstrate such generosity at Christmas time. The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld has been privileged to undertake the Festive Food collection for 10 years now and with the support of TESCO Craigmarloch and their customers we will continue with it for so long as there are people who can benefit

The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld will arrange for Aquaboxes to be sent to provide the means to have emergency - safe and clean water in the disaster areas.
